The NYPD is under scrutiny for its  apparent racial enforcement of social distancing policy.  During a recent funeral procession in Brooklyn N.Y, hundreds of  orthodox Hasidic  Jews were observed flaunting social distancing rules . The funeral procession carried on without interruption, while the NYPD stood idle declining to take and social distancing enforcement action.  

Meanwhile in Canarsie Brooklyn,  a considerably smaller group of African American and Latinos attended a gathering at a local barbershop seeking a reprieve from extensive home quarantine .  A short while into the event multiple NYPD units descended on the establishment  and promptly  began detaining individuals.  The  NYPD arrested some patrons, and issued over  60 summons for  social  distancing violations to others.

Curiously,  the NYPD readily publicized the arrest of  the Blacks  and Latinos while declining to comment on the funeral procession. 

The bottomline is , the role of law enforcement is to enforce the law without fear, or favor.  The disparate enforcement of laws undermine an quintessential feature  of a democratic society which holds  “we are a government  of laws , not of men”
