The civil rights movement was a pivotal moment in black history. The era mainly consisted of blacks begging at the foot of whites for food, clothing shelter and to be acknowledged and treated as formidable human beings.
Sadly, despite the good intentions of some to realize the whimsical dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for blacks to be judged by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin. Former FBI director Edgar J. Hoover under the auspice of the United States government was adamant that Dr. King’s dream would never materialize into reality.
During the 1960’s the U.S intelligence community, working in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of investigation created the Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) specifically designed to undermine black leaders and Black Nationalist movements.
Edgar J Hoover, in a memo released pursuant to a freedom of information request evidenced the fact that he was complicit in the murder of Malcom X, who was at the time National spokesperson for the Nation of Islam. Hoover is quoted as saying “Do something about Malcom X.” Reputable historical scholars have interpreted Hoover’s remarks as being an assassination directive.
The murder of Malcolm X was part of the strategic measures of the United States government to undermine the black liberation movement here in America, and to encourage compliance abroad. Edgar J Hoover provided FBI agents carte blanche authority to prevent the rise of a “Black Messiah,” someone capable of inspiring and leading the Black nation, might emerge to challenge the U.S. status quo. They were especially concerned about Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Huey Newton, and Fred Hampton.
Imagine , if you will , that Elijah Muhammad and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were left to pursue and complete their just and noble works. If so, America would now be much better off. The stifling of black liberation retarded the growth and development of America into a mature and refined democracy. The murder of Dr. King, and Malcom X foreshadowed the death of the republic.
