The American dream traditionally referred to the aspirations of those seeking personal financial security. However the American dream should more appropriately be called the American Scheme. Hard work and diligence no longer pays off.
With staggering wages , and high unemployment state governments constantly connive and conjure innovative means to make up for their declining tax base .One of the most popular ways by which governments generate revenue is by state endorsed gambling, formally known as the lottery.
State lottery systems are called by social economist -a poor tax. Lottery vendors are prevalent in poor economically depressed communities. The advertisements are uniquely tailored to stimulate the pain point of poverty and dreaded mediocre existence. Slick taglines such as “Hey you never know” prompts the individual to take immediate action by purchasing what is more often than not a losing lottery ticket.
The lottery is a fraud and must be abolished. If any citizen were to advertise “all you need is a dollar and a dream” as the New York State lottery commission has done for years, and gave out small pieces of paper in exchange for money -that person would be arrested , charged and convicted of fraud. The bottom line is- dreams are free, and states should not be in the business of selling them.
